Collection: VHILS
Alexandre Farto was born in Portugal in 1987. He studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art in London. Vhils lives and works in London and Lisbon. He gained prominence when his work of a face carved into a wall appeared alongside a picture by street artist Banksy at the Cans Festival in London in 2008. A photograph of him creating the work appeared on the front page of The Times. The style with which we recognize Vhils today is that of the destruction of a surface to create a figure: we can almost speak of a kind of urban bas-relief.Speaking of walls, Vhils' creative process stems from the search for the subject: usually a simple face, a person who can humanize the place. Vhils defines his subjects as "everyday heroes": the artist wants to create an indissoluble bond between the city and the population since one takes care of the other.
